Iâm serious about this. I recommend you do this evaluation formally. You should build a matrix and rate each company against these criteria on a scale of low, medium, and high.
Something like this:
Figure 2. Analyzing multiple job offers.
In my case, Company A was an opportunity to be the number-two person in a small division of a large company. But it ranked low on âopportunity for advancementâ because the boss and I were about the same age, so I figured he wouldnât retire until I was ready to.
Company B was a defense company, but the job was in a field I wasnât familiar with (yet). I really liked the boss Iâd be working for, the chemistry seemed right, there was plenty of opportunity for advancement, and everything about it seemed good except I wasnât crazy about the location.
But Company C came with that one intangible: the excitement factor. It was the racetrack opportunity, which had the potential to be fun. I loved everything about it, that is, until the day I decided to visit one of the racetrackâs off track betting (OTB) facilities on my own time. I would describe what I saw there as disquieting.
I worried that the OTB facility was making its money from a bunch of old men with gambling problems, and they were feeding their habit by betting their Social Security checks. This was eye-opening for me, and I began to question the morality of the situation.
Talk about a cold splash of water to the face! I came out of my trance (with the help of my wife) and ranked Company C very low in âcompany values.â
In the end, I went with Company B. Fifteen years downrange I still believe I made the right decision. And to my surprise, I ended up loving the location.
I hope you have this problem (multiple offers) too. And I hope you make your decision carefully and well.
